Testimonial

Of all the attributes I would wish my children, one rises well above the rest, the development of a strong character. Discipline ranks high, compassion as well, patience, dependability and drive all are very important. In my experience each of these are attributes of an individual possessing a good or strong character. I have witnessed the significant contribution the martial arts have made with regard to the physical and emotional development of my two sons. They have been exceptionally fortunate to have been associated with Bobby Lawrence Karate and Mr. Ken Ruano. A man more often than not resembles those he associates with and this applies to an even greater degree in youth. Both of my sons began their training at an early age with Mister Ruano and they have excelled in multiple areas of their lives ever since. Now approaching the high school graduation I can reflect as to the countless times over the years I have heard their teaches say, “I wish there were more young men who demonstrated the respect for others your boys do. I don’t know what you and your wife have done, but you’ve certainly done something right.”

I have watched my boys excel in baseball, football and track among their many athletic endeavors. I have observed their popularity and abundance of healthy relationships. Without exaggeration I know what has contributed to their success and I am insistent that the martial arts and the guidance of quality people like Ken Ruano have played a significant part in the development of the character of these two fine young men.

Thank you Ken, it’s friends like you that make all the difference.

Perseverance

THE STORY OF THE CHINESE BAMBOO

The Chinese plant the seed: they water and fertilize it, but the first year nothing happens. The third and fourth years they water and fertilize it, with no apparent results, and sometime during the course of the fifth year, in a period of six weeks, the Chinese Bamboo Tree grows roughly ninety feet.

The question is, did it grow ninety feet in six weeks or did it grow ninety feet in five years? The obvious answer is that it grew ninety feet in five years because, had they not applied the water and fertilizer each year, there would be no Chinese Bamboo Tree. All of us have had those “Chinese Bamboo Tree” experiences. We might have had a difficult assignment in math, social studies or science. We had to work at it again and again without coming up with the correct answer. Once we did finally get the answer it seemed simple and obvious. We came up with the answer not because of our intellectual brilliance but because of our perseverance.

In this month’s activity, you fill find a few questions concerning perseverance and how developing it will help you at home, school and goal setting. Complete the activity. Bring it to class during tip week.
